Nutrition labels are the roadmaps to a healthy diet and lifestyle, providing valuable information about ingredients in foods and beverages. Learning to properly read a nutrition label can help you make informed decisions about maintaining a balanced diet.

Carbonated Soft Drink Nutrition Labels

At left is a typical nutrition label with common ingredients for regular carbonated soft drinks. Not all soft drinks contain these ingredients, so be sure to read the label of your favorite beverage for its specific ingredients.

Regular carbonated soft drinks may contain the following ingredients:

1. Carbonated Water
Water is the base of soft drinks. Carbon dioxide is the colourless, odourless gas that provides the water with effervescence and bubbles.

2. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)
A nutritive (caloric) sweetener.
Diet soft drinks do not use full-calorie sweeteners such as sucrose or high fructose corn syrup.  Rather, they use low-calorie sweeteners or sugar substitutes.  These add sweetness without calories.

3. Caramel Color
A colouring agent with a minimal effect on the soda flavor.

4. Phosphoric Acid
A flavoring agent that provides tartness and acts as a preservative.

5. Citric Acid
A specific type of flavoring agent used in citrus soft drinks.

6. Caffeine
A flavor enhancer.

7. Sodium Benzoate or Potassium Benzoate
An antimicrobial agent that helps prevent bacteria, yeasts and molds.
