Letter to the Editor (St Catherines Standard)
In response to the August 25th article "Region mulls recycling in public places" I wish to correct the misconception that beverage containers form the majority of waste material in public spaces.
In fact, all used beverage containers in Ontario account for only 0.5% of the total waste stream and only 4% of the volume of material in the blue box. Waste in public spaces is composed of a variety of material including cigarette butts, used newspapers, coffee cups, take out restaurant packaging and a wide variety of food packaging, some of which are beverage containers.
Making recycling more convenient in public spaces helps protect the beauty of our parks and civic buildings, reduces litter and is good for the environment. Refreshments Canada and the Canadian Beverage Industry are pleased to be involved in the discussions and planning for a potential public space pilot program in the Region of Niagara. The beverage industry's support demonstrates the long tradition of environmental leadership and the commitment to support making recycling accessible and convenient for Ontarians.
Refreshments Canada is the premier trade association representing the broad spectrum of brands and companies that manufacture and distribute the majority of non-alcoholic liquid refreshment beverages consumed in Canada.
